de Brún to tell MEPs that peace process requires both governments to face down DUP

3 July, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún is this evening expected to deliver a speech in the European Parliament where she will tell assembled MEPs that ‘there is a huge responsibility on both the British and Irish governments to move the peace process forward’.

Ms de Brún will make her comments as MEPs gather in Strasbourg for the July session of the European Parliament.

Speaking today Ms de Brún said:

“There is a tremendous amount of goodwill across Europe towards Ireland and in support of the peace process specifically. This evening’s speech will focus on the need for both governments to take charge of the peace process and stand firm against the DUP who seem to be dictating the agenda.

“It is clear that the DUP have shown no interest in sharing power and have been allowed by the two governments to prevent progress being made. This situation remains wholly unacceptable. There is a huge responsibility on both governments to move the process forward. They must act to bring about the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, which remains an internationally recognized treaty.

“It is important that my colleagues in the European Parliament are made aware of the increasing frustration felt by those who want to move this process forward. If both governments do not act to collectively drive forward the process, then it will begin to quickly unravel.” ENDS
