Mary Lou McDonald condemns attack on Dublin City Fire-fighter26 June, 2006
Mary Lou McDonald condemns attack on Dublin City Fire-fighter Speaking today Ms McDonald said: “This attack upon a fire-fighter in Dublin City Centre is the latest in a long line of attacks on our emergency services in the capital. It is only a matter of time before a fire-fighter is killed while carrying out a vital public service and protecting the community. “For a tiny minority of people within the community, attacking the emergency services has become a regular past time. My colleague Councillor Christy Burke has submitted a motion to the July sitting of the Dublin City Council calling for all emergency service personnel to be issued with stab proof vests and the installation of CCTV cameras in ambulance vehicles. “It is sad that measures like these are required, but the protection of our emergency services personnel must be paramount. I know that at a community level, very many people are working to ensure that these attacks are stopped, particularly amongst our young people. These attacks need to cease, and we need to adequately educate those who think it is acceptable to attack a fire man or an ambulance woman.” ENDS |
