Baroness Ashton must not follow Mandelson’s failed WTO policies

4 octobre 2008

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún has called on Baroness Ashton of Upholland not to follow the disastrous policies of her/his predecessor Peter Mandelson as European Trade Commissioner if her/his appointment is approved by the European Parliament.

Ms de Brún made her comments amidst news that Commissioner Mandelson is set to return to the British cabinet in London.

Ms de Brún said:

“In the event that her appointment is approved by the European Parliament, I call on Baroness Ashton not to pursue the failed policies of her predecessor Peter Mandelson who, as European Commissioner, brought forward proposals that would have done untold damage to both farmers in the EU and people in the developing world had the recent WTO talks not collapsed. The EU Trade Commissioner was willing to sacrifice the welfare of farmers and of our rural communities, not for the sake of the developing world but as part of his international trade games. It is unlikely that the WTO talks will re-convene in the near future but any future WTO talks should not include the disastrous proposals put forward by Peter Mandelson, and I would call on Baroness Ashton to ensure that these proposals are now buried once and for all..
